**Stuart Evans** (born 14 June 1963)[4] is a Welsh former [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) and [rugby league](/source/Rugby_league) player who played from the 1980s up until the early 2000s.

Evans also took up a career in coaching the game after he retired from his long and successful professional playing career, having coached up till 2019.

## Playing career

### Rugby union

Born in [Neath](/source/Neath) in June 1963, Evans played for several rugby union clubs, including [British Steel](/source/Corus_(Port_Talbot)_RFC), for whom he once worked, [Resolven](/source/Resolven_RFC), [Swansea](/source/Swansea_RFC), [Western Suburbs](/source/Western_Suburbs_Rugby_Football_Club), [Neath](/source/Neath_RFC) and [Barbarian F.C.](/source/Barbarian_F.C.) Between 1985 and 1987, Evans played for the [Wales national rugby union team](/source/Wales_national_rugby_union_team) on nine occasions, and played in the [1987 Rugby World Cup](/source/1987_Rugby_World_Cup).

### Rugby league

In September 1987, Evans switched codes to rugby league, joining [St Helens](/source/St_Helens_R.F.C.).[5]

Evans appeared as an [substitute](/source/Substitution_(sport)) (replacing [Peter Souto](/source/Peter_Souto)) in [St Helens](/source/St_Helens_R.F.C.)' 15–14 victory over [Leeds](/source/Leeds_Rhinos) in the [1987–88 John Player Special Trophy](/source/1987%E2%80%9388_John_Player_Special_Trophy) Final during the [1987–88 season](/source/1987%E2%80%9388_Rugby_Football_League_season) at [Central Park](/source/Central_Park_(Wigan)), [Wigan](/source/Wigan) on Saturday 9 January 1988. He also came on as a substitute in St Helen's 0–27 defeat against [Wigan](/source/Wigan_Warriors) in the [1988–89 Challenge Cup](/source/1988%E2%80%9389_Challenge_Cup) final at [Wembley Stadium](/source/Wembley_Stadium_(1923)).

### Return to rugby union

After leaving St Helens, Evans spent several years attempting to return to rugby union. The governing bodies at the time placed a lifetime ban on anyone who had played professional rugby league, but Evans took the case to court to have the ban overturned.[6] He was eventually re-instated in [1995](/source/1995%E2%80%9396_French_Rugby_Union_Championship), but ruptured his achilles tendon in his first appearance for French club [FC Grenoble](/source/FC_Grenoble).[2]
