**Stuart Dybek** (born April 10, 1942) is an American writer of fiction and poetry.

## Biography

Dybek, a second-generation [Polish American](/source/Polish_American),[2] was born in [Chicago](/source/Chicago%2C_Illinois), [Illinois](/source/Illinois) and raised in Chicago's [Little Village](/source/Little_Village%2C_Chicago) and [Pilsen](/source/Pilsen%2C_Chicago) neighborhoods in the 1950s and early 1960s. He graduated from [St. Rita of Cascia High School](/source/St._Rita_of_Cascia_High_School) in 1959 and earned an [MFA](/source/Master_of_Fine_Arts) from the [Iowa Writers' Workshop](/source/Iowa_Writers'_Workshop) at the [University of Iowa](/source/University_of_Iowa). He has an [MA](/source/Master_of_Arts) in literature from [Loyola University Chicago](/source/Loyola_University_Chicago).[3]

Often compared to [Saul Bellow](/source/Saul_Bellow) and [Theodore Dreiser](/source/Theodore_Dreiser) for his unique portrayal of setting and landscapes, Dybek is "among the first writers of Polish descent (who write about the ethnic self) to receive national recognition."[4]

After teaching for more than 30 years at [Western Michigan University](/source/Western_Michigan_University), where he remains an adjunct professor of English and a member of the permanent faculty of the Prague Summer Program, Dybek became the Distinguished Writer in Residence at [Northwestern University](/source/Northwestern_University) where he teaches at the [School of Professional Studies](/source/Northwestern_University_School_of_Professional_Studies).

## Work

Dybek's two collections of poems are *Brass Knuckles* (1979) and *Streets in Their Own Ink* (2004). His fiction includes *Childhood and Other Neighborhoods*, *The Coast of Chicago*, *[I Sailed With Magellan](/source/I_Sailed_With_Magellan)*, a novel-in-stories, *Paper Lantern: Love Stories*, and *Ecstatic Cahoots: Fifty Short Stories*. His work has been anthologized and has appeared in magazines such as *[Harper's](/source/Harper's)*, *[The New Yorker](/source/The_New_Yorker)*, *[Atlantic Monthly](/source/Atlantic_Monthly)*, *[Poetry](/source/Poetry_(magazine))*, *[Tin House](/source/Tin_House)*, *[Ploughshares](/source/Ploughshares)*, *[The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction](/source/The_Magazine_of_Fantasy_and_Science_Fiction)* and *[TriQuarterly](/source/TriQuarterly)*.

## Awards
