**Stuart Frank Delery**[1] (born 1968)[2] is an American attorney who served as the [White House Counsel](/source/White_House_Counsel), from July 2022 to September 2023.[3][4] Previously, Delery had served as [Deputy Counsel to the President](/source/Office_of_the_White_House_Counsel) in the [Biden administration](/source/Biden_administration), announced in December 2020. Prior to that, he was the Acting [United States Associate Attorney General](/source/United_States_Associate_Attorney_General) from 2014 to 2016.

## Education

Delery earned a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree from the [University of Virginia](/source/University_of_Virginia) in 1990 and a [Juris Doctor](/source/Juris_Doctor) from [Yale Law School](/source/Yale_Law_School) in 1993.[1] He served as a law clerk for Justices [Sandra Day O'Connor](/source/Sandra_Day_O'Connor) and [Byron White](/source/Byron_White), in addition to [Gerald Bard Tjoflat](/source/Gerald_Bard_Tjoflat) of the [United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit](/source/United_States_Court_of_Appeals_for_the_Eleventh_Circuit).[5]

## Career

Delery joined the [United States Department of Justice](/source/United_States_Department_of_Justice) in 2009 as the chief of staff and counselor to the [United States Deputy Attorney General](/source/United_States_Deputy_Attorney_General). He later served as a senior counselor to the [United States Attorney General](/source/United_States_Attorney_General). From March 2012 to September 2014, Delery served as the 35th [Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division](/source/United_States_Department_of_Justice_Civil_Division).[6] After the resignation of [Tony West](/source/Tony_West_(attorney)), Delery served as acting [Associate Attorney General](/source/United_States_Associate_Attorney_General) from 2014 to 2016.[7][8][9][10] Delery stepped down from his position in April 2016.[11]

After leaving the [Department of Justice](/source/United_States_Department_of_Justice), Delery worked as a partner at [Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher](/source/Gibson%2C_Dunn_%26_Crutcher) in [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington%2C_D.C.), where he specialized in white collar defense, constitutional law, and national security. He also maintained a pro bono practice, where he specialized in [LGBT](/source/LGBT) and immigration cases.[12][13]

In July 2022, Delery became [White House Counsel](/source/White_House_Counsel) after the departure of [Dana Remus](/source/Dana_Remus). He is the first openly [gay](/source/Gay) person to hold this role.[14][15]

## Personal life

Delery is [gay](/source/Gay). Upon his nomination as [associate attorney general](/source/United_States_Associate_Attorney_General) in 2012, he became the highest-ranking openly-gay person serving in the [United States Department of Justice](/source/United_States_Department_of_Justice).[16]
