# Stuart A. Staples

**Stuart Ashton Staples** (born 14 November 1965) is an English [musician](/source/Musician) best known as the lead singer of [indie](/source/Indie_music) band [Tindersticks](/source/Tindersticks), in which he also plays guitar. Staples is noted for his [crooning](/source/Crooning) vocal style and a bass, nasal voice.

## Biography

Prior to co-founding Tindersticks, Staples played in a band called Indignant Desert Birds (1983-1987) and thereafter in a band called [Asphalt Ribbons](/source/Asphalt_Ribbons), whose final line-up was nearly identical to that of his later band.[3] He has released two solo albums: *[Lucky Dog Recordings 03-04](/source/Lucky_Dog_Recordings_03-04)* and *[Leaving Songs](/source/Leaving_Songs_(Stuart_A._Staples_album))*.

Staples is also active as a film composer. He has provided the [soundtrack](/source/Soundtrack) to many of [Claire Denis's](/source/Claire_Denis) films, including *[L'Intrus](/source/L'Intrus)* (2004),[4][5] *[White Material](/source/White_Material)* (2009),[6] and *[High Life](/source/High_Life_(2018_film))* (2018). Tindersticks had previously recorded the music to two other Denis films, *[Nénette et Boni](/source/N%C3%A9nette_et_Boni)* and *[Trouble Every Day](/source/Trouble_Every_Day_(film))*.[3] In 2007 Staples collaborated with David Boulter on the soundtrack to *Tot Ziens!* (We'll meet Again), [a short](/source/Short_film) by Belgian director Klaus Verscheure, and he also provided the music for the 2019 film *Vers la bataille*, the fourth film by Aurélien Vernhes-Lermusiaux.

In 2017, the [British Film Institute](/source/British_Film_Institute) released *Minute Bodies*, a film he directed and scored with [Christine Ott](/source/Christine_Ott) and [Thomas Belhom](/source/Thomas_Belhom) of films by the naturalist [F. Percy Smith](/source/F._Percy_Smith).[7]
