is the [finance professional](/source/financial_analyst) responsible for designing [structured product](/source/structured_product)s.
Their solution will typically deliver a bespoke [hedge](/source/hedge_(finance)), ["yield enhancement"](/source/Investment_banking), or other feature, [as appropriate to the client's needs](/source/Structured_product), and must inhere relevant regulatory and accounting considerations;
see {{slink|Structured product#Product design and manufacture}}.

The role is usually quantitative, straddling that of [sales and trading](/source/sales_and_trading) and [front-office quantitative analyst](/source/Quantitative_analysis_(finance)).
The structurer's main [analytic task](/source/Financial_modeling) is to determine how the [pay rules in question](/source/Settlement_(finance)) will distribute [cash flow](/source/cash_flow)s for a deal;
to do so, they will typically [build computer models](/source/Financial_modeling) to [simulate these subsequent payments](/source/Monte_Carlo_methods_in_finance), thereby also estimating how [collateral payments](/source/collateral_(finance)) affect the cash flows.

The above is preliminary to [deal settlement](/source/settlement_(finance)); thereafter it will be in the hands of the [Bond administration](/source/Investment_banking) to apply the rules as described in the deal [legal document](/source/Legal_instrument)s.
