In [military tactics](/source/Military_tactics), a **strongpoint** is a key point in a [defensive fighting position](/source/Defensive_fighting_position) which anchors the overall [defense line](/source/Defense_line). This may include [redoubts](/source/Redoubt), [bunkers](/source/Bunker), [pillboxes](/source/Pillbox_(military)), [trenches](/source/Trench_(military)) or [fortresses](/source/Fortress), alone or in combination; the primary requirement is that it should not be easily overrun or avoided.[1] A blocking position in good defensive terrain commanding the [lines of communication](/source/Lines_of_communication), such as high ground, is preferred. Examples from history include [Thermopylae](/source/Battle_of_Thermopylae), where the ancient Greeks held back a much larger Persian army, and [Monte Cassino](/source/Battle_of_Monte_Cassino), which anchored the [Winter Line](/source/Winter_Line) in Italy in [World War II](/source/World_War_II).
