The **Strong River** is a 95.2-mile (153.2-kilometre)[1] [river](/source/River) in south-central [Mississippi](/source/Mississippi) in the [United States](/source/United_States).[2] It is a [tributary](/source/Tributary) of the [Pearl River](/source/Pearl_River_(Mississippi%E2%80%93Louisiana)),[3] which flows to the [Gulf of Mexico](/source/Gulf_of_Mexico).

## Course

The stream headwaters arise in the [Bienville National Forest](/source/Bienville_National_Forest) in [Scott County](/source/Scott_County,_Mississippi), about 6 miles (10 km) west of [Forest](/source/Forest,_Mississippi) at [32°23′08″N 89°35′04″W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=32_23_08_N_89_35_04_W)[2] and at an elevation of about 465 feet (142 meters).[4] and flows generally to the southwest through [Smith](/source/Smith_County,_Mississippi), [Rankin](/source/Rankin_County,_Mississippi) and [Simpson](/source/Simpson_County,_Mississippi) counties, past the town of [D'Lo](/source/D'Lo,_Mississippi).[3] It flows into the Pearl River 2 miles (3 km) southeast of [Georgetown](/source/Georgetown,_Mississippi) at [31°50′59″N 90°08′09″W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=31_50_59_N_90_08_09_W) at an elevation of 197 feet (60 meters).[2]

The Strong River takes its name from the English translation of the [Choctaw](/source/Choctaw) words *boke* or *boge* *homi*, which means "bitter creek" or "strong tasting creek", a result of the [tannic acid](/source/Tannic_acid) dissolved in the water by decomposing leaves. The name has nothing to do with the velocity of the stream.[citation needed]
