# Stretch Island

**Stretch Island** is an island in [Case Inlet](/source/Case_Inlet) in the southern part of [Puget Sound](/source/Puget_Sound) in the U.S. state of [Washington](/source/Washington_(state)). It forms part of the unincorporated [Mason County](/source/Mason_County,_Washington) community of [Allyn-Grapeview](/source/Allyn-Grapeview,_Washington). The island has a land area of 1.2179 km2 (300.95 [acres](/source/Acre)) and a population of 162 as of the [2010 census](/source/United_States_Census,_2010). On the island's north side, it has [buoys](/source/Buoys) for overnight [mooring](/source/Mooring_(watercraft)), and [Stretch Point State Park](/source/Stretch_Point_State_Park), a small state park only accessible by boat.

Stretch Island was named by the [Wilkes Expedition](/source/Wilkes_Expedition) in 1841 for crew member Samuel Stretch.[1] From the 1870s to the 1920s, transportation needs for Stretch Island and other communities along Case Inlet were once served by a [small flotilla of steamboats](/source/Case_Inlet_steamboats).[2] The local community based monthly newspaper called the *North Bay Review*, services [Allyn](/source/Allyn,_Washington).[3]
