It lies in the [civil parish](/source/civil_parishes_in_England) of [Wistanstow](/source/Wistanstow) and is situated just off the [A49 road](/source/A49_road), {{convert|2|mi|km}} north of the small town of [Craven Arms](/source/Craven_Arms). The nearest settlement is [Upper Affcot](/source/Upper_Affcot), a hamlet located north of the A49, with a [public house](/source/public_house). Strefford is situated at an [elevation](/source/elevation) between {{convert|130|m|ft}} and 135m, and just to the east is Strefford Wood, which is at the southern end of [Wenlock Edge](/source/Wenlock_Edge); the [bridleway](/source/bridleway) that runs along the Edge ends just outside the hamlet.<ref name=Ordnance>[Ordnance Survey](/source/Ordnance_Survey) mapping</ref>

Strefford was recorded in the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book) as 'Straford' and in 1255 as 'Streford'.<ref name=Poulton>Poulton-Smith (2009) ''Shropshire Place Names'' p 136</ref> The name derives from its location between the [Roman road](/source/Roman_road) (a "Street") at Wistanstow (to the west) and the [ford](/source/ford_(crossing)) immediately to the east of the hamlet,<ref name=Poulton/> which crosses the Byne or Quinny Brook. The Byne and Quinny Brooks meet just before the ford, and about a mile downstream, they flow into the [River Onny](/source/River_Onny).<ref name=Ordnance/>
