'''''Strathmore''''' was a British ship in the 1870s.

On 1 July 1875, while on a voyage from [Dundee](/source/Dundee) in the United Kingdom to [Otago](/source/Otago), New Zealand, the ship was wrecked off the [Crozet Islands](/source/Crozet_Islands).<ref name="Times260276">{{Cite newspaper The Times |title=The Strathmore |date=23 February 1876 |issue=28562 |page=8 |column=D }}</ref><ref name="Times280276">{{Cite newspaper The Times |title=The Strathmore |date=28 February 1876 |issue=28563 |page=4 |column=F }}</ref><ref name=AVC /> The passengers and crew were considered dead after the ship did not arrive at its final destination. However, 44 crew and passengers managed to survive on a small island by eating eggs and geese, albatrosses, and other seabirds. They also ate root vegetables and fish.<ref name=AVC>{{Cite news |url= https://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=MMMAAS01:210137066:mpeg21:a00007|work= Algemeene visscherij-courant|title=Varia. |date=2 April 1876|via=[Delpher](/source/Delpher)|language=nl}}</ref> Five people died because of the low temperature at the island.<ref name=AVC />

After seven months, they were rescued on 22 January 1876 by the American [whaler](/source/whaler) ''Young Phoenix -'' captained by Civil War hero [David Lewis Gifford](/source/David_Lewis_Gifford).<ref>{{Cite web |url= https://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-Bre02Whit-t1-body-d2-d1-d1.html|work= [Victoria University of Wellington](/source/Victoria_University_of_Wellington) |title=Wreck of the Ship Strathmore}}</ref><ref>{{Cite news|url= https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/1876-inspirational-survivors/6IXMO2456IIEJQ2TCZKAYQY3RQ/ |work= [New Zealand Herald](/source/New_Zealand_Herald) |title= 1876: Inspirational survivors|date=10 October 1876}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |url=http://crozetvv.free.fr/histoire_naufrages3.php|work= Crozet|title=Le naufrage du Strathmore (1875)|language=fr}}</ref>
