The '''Strabane transmitting station''' is a [broadcasting](/source/broadcasting) and [telecommunications](/source/telecommunications) facility located at Legfordrum and situated very close to the town of [Strabane](/source/Strabane), in [County Tyrone](/source/County_Tyrone), [Northern Ireland](/source/Northern_Ireland) (Grid Reference: H393947, GNR: IH393947). It is owned and operated by [Arqiva](/source/Arqiva).

It includes a {{convert|305.5|m|ft|0}} high [guyed steel lattice mast](/source/Radio_masts_and_towers), which is [the tallest structure in Ireland](/source/List_of_tallest_buildings_and_structures_in_Ireland). The transmission [antennas](/source/Antenna_(radio)) surmounting the structure are contained within a fibreglass cylinder. Constructed in 1963, it came into service on 18 February of that year.

==History==
It was originally commissioned by the [Independent Television Authority](/source/Independent_Television_Authority) to bring ITV signals (provided by [Ulster Television](/source/UTV_(TV_channel))) to the west of Northern Ireland, including the districts of [Derry](/source/Derry) and [Enniskillen](/source/Enniskillen) on [405-line](/source/405-line) [VHF](/source/VHF), using Channel 8 ([Band III](/source/Band_III)). The transmitter commenced full service on Monday 18 February 1963.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.thebigtower.com/live/Strabane/index.htm|title=TheBigTower Strabane Transmitter|access-date=2021-09-26|archive-date=2016-04-07|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160407113008/http://www.thebigtower.com/live/Strabane/index.htm|url-status=live}}</ref> 405 line television was discontinued in the UK in 1985.

When [UHF](/source/UHF) television came to Northern Ireland, main transmitters were commissioned at [Limavady](/source/Limavady) and Brougher Mountain, near [Omagh](/source/Omagh). However this left a gap in the Strabane and [Newtownstewart](/source/Newtownstewart) areas, so in July 1977 UHF television was added to the Strabane site. Due to the elevation of the antennas (584 m above sea level), a 2[kW](/source/kW) [effective radiated power](/source/effective_radiated_power) was sufficient to cover a very wide area, with [coverage](/source/coverage_map) available well into [County Donegal](/source/County_Donegal).

In 2001, the site was installed with a transmitter for Score Northern Ireland, a regional digital radio [multiplex](/source/Multiplexing).

[Digital switchover](/source/Digital_switchover) took place in Northern Ireland in October 2012, when analogue TV transmissions from this station were replaced by digital transmissions. The [coverage](/source/coverage_map) area is approximately the same as the analogue services, and there are three digital multiplexes transmitted.
