**Steytlerville** is a settlement on the [R329 route](/source/R329_(South_Africa)) in [Sarah Baartman District Municipality](/source/Sarah_Baartman_District_Municipality) in the [Eastern Cape](/source/Eastern_Cape) province of South Africa. The town is situated on the right bank of the [Groot River](/source/Groot_River_(Eastern_Cape)), where the river emerges from a valley in the [Grootrivierberge](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Grootrivierberge&action=edit&redlink=1) at Noorspoort. It is 164 km north-west of [Port Elizabeth](/source/Port_Elizabeth) and 90 km east of [Willowmore](/source/Willowmore). It was founded in 1876 on the farm Noorspoort and attained municipal status in 1891. It is named after Reverend [Abraham Isaac Steytler](/source/Abraham_Isaac_Steytler) (1840–1922), a minister of the [Dutch Reformed Church](/source/Dutch_Reformed_Church) and Moderator of the Cape synod from 1909 to 1915.[2]
