'''Steynton''' or Stainton is a [parish](/source/parish) in the county of [Pembrokeshire](/source/Pembrokeshire), Wales, formerly in the [hundred of Rhôs](/source/Roose_(hundred)) and now an area of [Milford Haven](/source/Milford_Haven) and in the Community of Tiers Cross. ==Geography==
Steynton has a crossroads from which roads lead to Milford Haven to the south, and from it toward Johnston and Haverfordwest in the north and Jordanston and [Pembroke](/source/Pembroke%2C_Pembrokeshire), [Pembroke Dock](/source/Pembroke_Dock) and Neyland to the east. The road to the west leads to the hamlet of [Thornton](/source/Thornton%2C_Pembrokeshire). The parish includes the hamlet of Dreenhill, near Haverfordwest, as well as other settlements.<ref name=parishmap>{{cite web |work=GENUKI |title=Steynton parish map |url=http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/PEM/Herbrandston/ParishMap.html |accessdate=21 April 2015}}</ref>

==Dreenhill==
While Steynton village is in the south of the parish, Dreenhill is a hamlet in the north (National Grid reference SM924134) on the B4327 road {{convert|1|mi|km}} southwest of [Haverfordwest](/source/Haverfordwest).<ref name=parishmap/> Dreenhill has a Calvanistic Methodist Chapel, established in 1834.<ref name=GENUKI/> The hamlet has a garage, The Masons pub and restaurant (formerly the Masons Arms) and a few houses, and is surrounded by farmland.

==History==
The [toponym](/source/toponym) is likely derived from the [Old English](/source/Old_English) ''tun'', meaning settlement or manor.<ref>{{cite web |url= http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/whatsinaname/sites/placenametool/?q=steynton |publisher= BBC Wales |title= What's in a Name |url-status= dead |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20121112061803/http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/whatsinaname/sites/placenametool/?q=steynton |archive-date= 2012-11-12 }}</ref>

Steynton was once a medieval parish and village, with a [parish church](/source/parish_church) dedicated to Saints [Cewydd](/source/Cewydd) and [Peter](/source/Saint_Peter). The oldest parts of the present church may be 14th or 15th century. The church may have had links with [Pill Priory](/source/Pill_Priory), which is about {{convert|2|mi|0}} to the south. The church tower was used as a musketry position in the [English Civil War](/source/English_Civil_War) action at [Pill Fort](/source/Pill_Fort) in Milford Haven.<ref>{{cite web |url= http://www.experiencepembrokeshire.com/history-archaeology/military-heritage/steynton |work= Experience Pembrokeshire |title= Steynton |access-date= 14 November 2009 |url-status= usurped |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20110710212306/http://www.experiencepembrokeshire.com/history-archaeology/military-heritage/steynton |archive-date= 10 July 2011 }}</ref> The church is directly in line with St Katherine's church to the south and Johnston church to the north. The parish was about {{convert|6|mi|0}} long from north to south, and up to {{convert|2|mi|0}} wide from east to west.<ref>{{cite book |editor1-last=Lewis |editor1-first=Samuel |editor1-link=Samuel Lewis (publisher) |year=1849 |chapter= Steynton, or Stainton |title=A Topographical Dictionary of Wales |edition=Fourth |place=London |publisher=[Samuel Lewis](/source/Samuel_Lewis_(publisher)) |pages=374–384 |url= http://www.british-history.ac.uk/topographical-dict/wales/pp374-384}}</ref> The ancient parish extended almost as far as Haverfordwest to the north.<ref name=GENUKI>{{cite web |work=GENUKI |title=Steynton |url= http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/PEM/Steynton/index.html |accessdate=21 April 2015}}</ref>

Steynton was originally separate from Milford Haven, being about {{convert|2|mi|0}} north-north-east of Milford, but Milford Haven has expanded and absorbed it. Steynton is part of the local government community of Miford Haven.
