**Stewbomb Creek** is a [tributary](/source/Tributary) of the [Little Iskut River](/source/Little_Iskut_River) and part of the [Stikine River](/source/Stikine_River) [watershed](/source/Drainage_basin) in northwest part of the [province](/source/Provinces_and_territories_of_Canada) of [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), [Canada](/source/Canada).[1][7] It flows generally southeast for roughly 14 km (8.7 mi)[5] to join the Little Iskut River, which flows into the [Iskut River](/source/Iskut_River), the largest tributary of the Stikine River.

Stewbomb Creek's watershed covers 88.9 km2 (34.3 sq mi), and is entirely in [Mount Edziza Provincial Park](/source/Mount_Edziza_Provincial_Park). The creek's mean annual [discharge](/source/Discharge_(hydrology)) is estimated at 3.48 m3/s (123 cu ft/s).[6]

The mouth of Stewbomb Creek is located about 68 km (42 mi) southeast of [Telegraph Creek](/source/Telegraph_Creek), British Columbia, about 120 km (75 mi) south of [Dease Lake](/source/Dease_Lake), British Columbia, and about 250 km (160 mi) southeast of [Juneau, Alaska](/source/Juneau%2C_Alaska).[5] Stewbomb Creek's watershed's [land cover](/source/Land_cover) is classified as 49.4% [barren](/source/Barren_vegetation), 13.8% [shrubland](/source/Shrubland), 13.7% [herbaceous](/source/Herbaceous_plant), 11.9% [snow](/source/Snow)/[glacier](/source/Glacier), 10.7% [conifer forest](/source/Conifer), and small amounts of other cover.[6]

Stewbomb Creek is in [Mount Edziza Provincial Park](/source/Mount_Edziza_Provincial_Park), which lies within the traditional territory of the [Tahltan First Nation](/source/Tahltan_First_Nation), of the [Tahltan](/source/Tahltan) people.[8][9]

## Geography

Stewbomb Creek originates on the north side of [Yeda Peak](/source/Yeda_Peak) of the [Spectrum Range](/source/Spectrum_Range). The creek flows north, then east. After about 10 km (6.2 mi) it is joined by [Artifact Creek](/source/Artifact_Creek).[10] About 4 km (2.5 mi) after that Stewbomb Creek empties into the Little Iskut River at the eastern boundary of Mount Edziza Provincial Park.[2] [Obsidian Ridge](/source/Obsidian_Ridge) lies between Stewbomb and Artifact Creeks.[2][11]

## History

According to the 1992 [Geological Survey of Canada](/source/Geological_Survey_of_Canada) memoir *The Late Cenozoic Mount Edziza Volcanic Complex, British Columbia*, Stewbomb Creek was so-named to commemorate the explosion of a [pressure cooker](/source/Pressure_cooker) full of [stew](/source/Stew). The incident happened in a tent while Canadian [volcanologist](/source/Volcanologist) [Jack Souther](/source/Jack_Souther) and his team were camping on the creek during field mapping.[12]
