# Stewart Richards

**Stewart Richards** (born 1956) is an English film producer, television executive, publisher and writer.

He is notable for producing award-winning British [arthouse films](/source/Art_film) in the 1980s and 1990s, including the 1991 [Oscar](/source/Academy_Awards)-nominated and [BAFTA](/source/British_Academy_Film_Awards)-nominated *[Dear Rosie](/source/Dear_Rosie),* the 1988 [*Palme d'Or*](/source/Palme_d'Or)-nominated *Out of Town,* and the 1990 *[Un Certain Regard](/source/Un_Certain_Regard)-*selected *[1871](/source/1871_(film))*.[1][2][3]

## Early life and education

Stewart was born in [Ripley](/source/Ripley,_Derbyshire), [Derbyshire](/source/Derbyshire), in 1956. Aged 17, he joined the [National Youth Theatre](/source/National_Youth_Theatre) and won an [Arts Council](/source/Arts_Council_of_Great_Britain) trainee director fellowship, working at the [Nottingham Playhouse](/source/Nottingham_Playhouse), the [Theatre Royal Lincoln](/source/New_Theatre_Royal_Lincoln) and [Birmingham Repertory Theatre](/source/Birmingham_Repertory_Theatre). He later studied for three years at the [London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art](/source/London_Academy_of_Music_and_Dramatic_Art).[4][5]

## Film career

In the 1980s, Stewart produced a number of [British art films](/source/Cinema_of_the_United_Kingdom#Art_cinema), including:

- *Out of Town*, a [short film](/source/Short_film) by Norman Hull and starring [David Morrissey](/source/David_Morrissey), which was in competition for the Palme d'Or at the [1988 Cannes Film Festival](/source/1988_Cannes_Film_Festival) and was screened at the 1988 [São Paulo International Film Festival](/source/S%C3%A3o_Paulo_International_Film_Festival);
- *[1871](/source/1871_(film))*, a feature film by [Ken McMullen](/source/Ken_McMullen_(film_director)) and starring [Roshan Seth](/source/Roshan_Seth) and [Timothy Spall](/source/Timothy_Spall) that was selected for *Un Certain Regard* at the [1990 Cannes Film Festival](/source/1990_Cannes_Film_Festival) and which was screened at the 1991 [American Film Institute](/source/American_Film_Institute) Los Angeles International Film Festival; and
- *[Dear Rosie](/source/Dear_Rosie)*, a short film by [Peter Cattaneo](/source/Peter_Cattaneo), co-written by [Peter Morgan](/source/Peter_Morgan), that was nominated for the 1991 [Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Live_Action_Short_Film) and the [BAFTA Award for Best Short Film](/source/BAFTA_Award_for_Best_Short_Film), and which won a gold plaque for best short film at the [Chicago International Film Festival](/source/Chicago_International_Film_Festival).[6][7][2][1][8][9]

## Television career

In the 1990s, Stewart joined [Channel 4 Films](/source/Film4_Productions) and [Film on Four](/source/Film4) and then joined the team that launched [Carlton Television](/source/Carlton_Television) in 1993, where he line-produced *[Frontiers](/source/Frontiers_(1996_TV_series))*, co-written by [Stephen Poliakoff](/source/Stephen_Poliakoff).[5]

## Publishing and writing

Stewart founded the [publishing house](/source/Publishing_house) Mr Punch, which produces [radio drama](/source/Radio_drama) and [audiobooks](/source/Audiobooks), including the 1995 three-part play *The Mutiny on the Bounty*, with [Oliver Reed](/source/Oliver_Reed), [Linus Roache](/source/Linus_Roache) and [Roger Daltrey](/source/Roger_Daltrey), for [BBC Radio 4](/source/BBC_Radio_4).[10][11]

He has written two books: *The Great Train Robbery: The definitive account*, about the [1963 Great Train Robbery](/source/Great_Train_Robbery_(1963)), which he co-produced as a documentary for [ITV Studios](/source/ITV_Studios); and *Curtain Down at Her Majesty’s*, about [Queen Victoria](/source/Queen_Victoria)'s final days, which he produced as a five-part drama for BBC Radio 4 and which was selected for *[Pick of the Week](/source/Pick_of_the_Week_(radio))*.[12][13][14][15]
