# Steven Stack

**Steven Stack** is an American [sociologist](/source/Sociologist) and professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at [Wayne State University](/source/Wayne_State_University), where he is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neuroscience.

He is known for his research on [suicide prevention](/source/Suicide_prevention),[1][2] including on the effects of media coverage of suicides on [copycat suicides](/source/Copycat_suicide).[3][4] He has also researched other forms of [violence](/source/Violence), including [homicide](/source/Homicide) and [murder-suicide](/source/Murder-suicide).[2][5]

## Awards

In 2003, Stack received the [Louis Dublin](/source/Louis_Dublin) Award from the [American Association of Suicidology](/source/American_Association_of_Suicidology).[1] Along with [Auburn University](/source/Auburn_University)'s James Gundlach, Stack received the 2004 [Ig Nobel Prize](/source/Ig_Nobel_Prize) for medicine for a 1992 study they co-authored on the relationship between [country music](/source/Country_music) and suicide rates.[6][7] In 2017, he became the first sociologist to receive the [International Association for Suicide Prevention](/source/International_Association_for_Suicide_Prevention)'s [Erwin Stengel](/source/Erwin_Stengel) Award.[8]
