**Steven Shavell** is an [economist](/source/Economist) who is currently Samuel R. Rosenthal Professor of [Law and Economics](/source/Law_and_economics) at [Harvard Law School](/source/Harvard_Law_School). Shavell is the founder and director of the School's John M. Olin Center for Law, Economics, and Business.[1]

## Biography

Steven Shavell graduated from the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan) in 1968. He obtained a Ph.D. in economics from [MIT](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology) in 1973. Shavell is working on the economic analysis of law, including topics such as [contracts](/source/Contract), [torts](/source/Tort), [property](/source/Property_rights_(economics)), [criminal law](/source/Criminal_law), and [legal process](/source/Legal_process). He was a [Guggenheim Fellow](/source/Guggenheim_Fellowship).
