**Steven Lehrer** (born 1944) is a physician and writer, known for medical research and for his English translation of [Else Ury](/source/Else_Ury).

## Early years and education

Lehrer was born in Los Angeles. He attended [UCLA](/source/UCLA) and graduated from [Johns Hopkins University](/source/Johns_Hopkins_University) and [Johns Hopkins School of Medicine](/source/Johns_Hopkins_School_of_Medicine).

## Career

After training and specialty board certification, Lehrer worked as a [radiologist](/source/Radiologist), [radiation oncologist](/source/Radiation_oncologist), and [nuclear medicine](/source/Nuclear_medicine) physician.

## Medical research

Lehrer has published on the topics of breast cancer and the estrogen receptor, prostate cancer, [puberty](/source/Puberty#Endocrine_perspective) and pregnancy.[1] He published two medical textbooks, *[Understanding Lung Sounds](/source/Understanding_Lung_Sounds)* and *[Understanding Pediatric Heart Sounds](/source/Understanding_Pediatric_Heart_Sounds)*.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

## Writer

Lehrer published the first English translation of the most popular book of German children's writer [Else Ury](/source/Else_Ury), *Nesthäkchen and the World War*.[11][12][13] He has published plays, a novel,[14] books on German history,[15] the [Holocaust](/source/Wannsee_House_and_the_Holocaust),[16] and the history of medicine.[17][18][19][20][21] He edited a collection of the stories of [Frank Buck](/source/Frank_Buck_(animal_collector))[22] and published English translations of *[Tanks Break Through!](/source/Tanks_Break_Through!)* by [Alfred-Ingemar Berndt](/source/Alfred-Ingemar_Berndt) and *[From Lemberg to Bordeaux](/source/From_Lemberg_to_Bordeaux)* by [Leo Leixner](/source/Leo_Leixner). Lehrer was interviewed on the History Channel series *Mavericks, Miracles, and Medicine* about his book *[Explorers of the Body](/source/Explorers_of_the_Body)*,[23] as well as by the BBC for their series, *Medical Mavericks, Beating Infection* (episode 4).[24][25]
