Before becoming an actor, Gilborn was a professor of [humanities](/source/humanities) at the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology) and faculty adviser to the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He also taught at [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University), [Columbia University](/source/Columbia_University) and at the [University of California, Berkeley](/source/University_of_California%2C_Berkeley).
