**Steven Butler** is an American [comic book](/source/Comic_book) artist. He is known both for [penciling](/source/Penciling) the [Archie Comics](/source/Archie_Comics) series *[Sonic the Hedgehog](/source/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(comics))* as well as creating new designs for Archie characters in 2007. He was born and raised in Lucedale, Mississippi, where he still lives and works.

## Career

Butler's work ranges from [inking](/source/Inker) and providing occasional cover duties for *[Cat and Mouse](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cat_and_Mouse_(comics)&action=edit&redlink=1)* to superhero illustrations in the original *Silver Storm* mini-series to publications such as [Marvel Comics](/source/Marvel_Comics)' *[Web of Spider-Man](/source/Web_of_Spider-Man)* and *[Silver Sable](/source/Silver_Sable)*. The independent comic *[The Badger](/source/Badger_(comics))* by [First Comics](/source/First_Comics) served to launch his career, but his work at Silverline Comics preceded Badger.

Butler designed the Ka-Blam Girl, the mascot for the comic book [print on demand](/source/Print_on_demand) company Ka-Blam Printing.[1]

Butler has also been involved in several Christian comics projects. From 1999 to 2007 Butler worked on the *PowerMark* comic series from Powermark Productions. In 1999 he also illustrated three tracts for wrestler [George South](/source/George_South) entitled *The Greatest Match Ever*, *Who is Your Tag-Team Partner?*, and *Who Are You Wrestling Against?*, packaged by [The Nate Butler Studio](/source/L_Nathan_Butler#Christian_comics) and published by PowerMark Productions. In 2005 he pencilled the *Welcome to Holsom* series published by Radiant Life (Gospel Publishing House).

In 2007, Butler redesigned the [Archie Comics](/source/Archie_Comics) characters to be more realistic. These designs did not replace the better-known cartoony [Dan DeCarlo](/source/Dan_DeCarlo)/[Bob Montana](/source/Bob_Montana) look, but are being used alongside the traditional designs for special projects. The first story to use the designs was "[Bad Boy Trouble](/source/Bad_Boy_Trouble)," which Butler also drew, and the second was "The Matchmakers," which was drawn by [Joe Staton](/source/Joe_Staton). These publications are unrelated to the "[New Riverdale](/source/New_Riverdale)" Archie reboot of 2015.

In 2021 Butler contributed the [Jim Aparo](/source/Jim_Aparo) inspired cover to Issue #1 of Austin Hough's The Masters from Power Comics, Inc. His good friend [Mort Todd](/source/Mort_Todd) contributed the colors.
