**Steven Bryce Valerio** (born August 16, 1977) is a Costa Rican former [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as an [attacking midfielder](/source/Attacking_midfielder) or [winger](/source/Winger_(association_football)).

## Club career

Bryce began his career in the [Costa Rican first division](/source/Primera_Divisi%C3%B3n_de_Costa_Rica) on loan from [Deportivo Saprissa](/source/Deportivo_Saprissa) with AD Goicoechea, making his debut on September 22, 1996, against [Herediano](/source/C.S._Herediano).[1] After that he played for [Deportivo Saprissa](/source/Deportivo_Saprissa) and [Liga Deportiva Alajuelense](/source/LD_Alajuelense) whom he joined in August 2000.[2] In his nine years in Costa Rica, Bryce won six national championships, in 1997–98, 1998–99, 2000–01, 2001–02, 2002–03 and 2003–04. In addition, he won a [CONCACAF Champions' Cup](/source/CONCACAF_Champions'_Cup) in [2004](/source/CONCACAF_Champions'_Cup_2004).

After his tenure with Alajuelense, he went to play with [Anorthosis](/source/Anorthosis_Famagusta_FC)[3] of the [Cypriot First Division](/source/Cypriot_First_Division) and [OFI](/source/OFI_Crete_F.C.)[4] of the [Super League Greece](/source/Super_League_Greece). He came back to America after a couple of unsuccessful season in Europe and was signed by [Brujas](/source/Brujas_FC),[5] a new club in his native Costa Rica owned by a local magnate. Six months later he decided to move to [Marathón](/source/C.D._Marath%C3%B3n)[6] in Honduras and then to [F.C. Motagua](/source/F.C._Motagua).[7] He never found his form and game in Honduras and by the end of his contract with [F.C. Motagua](/source/F.C._Motagua), he suffered and injury[8] that took him out of the fields for almost a year. He signed for [Liga Deportiva Alajuelense](/source/LD_Alajuelense) and started his recovery but did not make it to the pitch one game and was released in summer 2008.[9] In the 2009–2010 season, Bryce was called up by [Universidad de Costa Rica](/source/Club_de_Futbol_Universidad_de_Costa_Rica)[10] a team that desperatively needed players with experience, but again, he never found his form and was released after a few months.

In January 2010, Bryce signed a one-year deal with [Brisbane Roar](/source/Brisbane_Roar),[11] but the story repeated itself and just after a few games he decided to put an end on his contract and definitively retire from football.

## International career

At junior level, Bryce played in [1997 FIFA World Youth Championship](/source/1997_FIFA_World_Youth_Championship) held in [Malaysia](/source/Malaysia), playing in all three of the team's matches, scoring once against Paraguay.[12] He made his debut for the senior [national team](/source/Costa_Rica_national_football_team) in a January 1998 [friendly match](/source/Friendly_match) against [Honduras](/source/Honduras_national_football_team) and collected a total of 73 caps, scoring 9 goals.[13] He has represented his country in 18 [FIFA World Cup qualification](/source/FIFA_World_Cup_qualification) matches.[12] and played at the [1999](/source/1999_UNCAF_Nations_Cup)[14] and [2003 UNCAF Nations Cups](/source/2003_UNCAF_Nations_Cup)[15][16] as well as at the [2002](/source/2002_CONCACAF_Gold_Cup),[17] [2003](/source/2003_CONCACAF_Gold_Cup)[18] and [2005 CONCACAF Gold Cups](/source/2005_CONCACAF_Gold_Cup)[19] and the [2001](/source/2001_Copa_Am%C3%A9rica)[20] and [2004 Copa América](/source/2004_Copa_Am%C3%A9rica).[21] Most notably however, he represented Costa Rica in the [2002 World Cup](/source/Football_World_Cup_2002), playing in all three of the team's matches, and assisting on one goal against each of Brazil and Turkey.[12] He also was a non-playing squad member at the [2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup](/source/2000_CONCACAF_Gold_Cup).[22][23]

He played his final international in a July [2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup](/source/2005_CONCACAF_Gold_Cup) match against [Honduras](/source/Honduras_national_football_team).

## Personal life

He is a son of Eustace Bryce and Mildred Valerio, with whom he lived in Canada in 1991 and 1992.[24] He is married to Cristina Páez. They have a daughter, Sarah, and a son, Samuel.[25]
