Steve Margolis graduated from [high school](/source/high_school) and would begin working as a [groom](/source/Groom_(profession)) in the sport of [thoroughbred horse racing](/source/thoroughbred_horse_racing) at [Belmont Park](/source/Belmont_Park) in [Elmont, Long Island, New York](/source/Elmont%2C_New_York) for [Hall of Fame](/source/National_Museum_of_Racing_and_Hall_of_Fame) trainer [John Veitch](/source/John_M._Veitch).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.americasbestracing.net/trainers/steve-margolis|title=Steve Margolis|accessdate= March 23, 2017}}</ref> In the 1990s Margolis worked for trainers [Pat Byrne](/source/Patrick_B._Byrne) and [Howard Tesher](/source/Howard_M._Tesher) and later on for [Stanley Hough](/source/Stanley_M._Hough). In 1997 he went to Kentucky with Stanley Hough as an assistant and in 2000 became a horse trainer himself. On September 15, 2000, Margolis won his first race as a trainer at [Turfway Park](/source/Turfway_Park) with a horse named Her Great Affair. In 2002, he received another horse named Request for Parole with whom he won the [WEBN](/source/WEBN_Stakes) and [John Battaglia Memorial Stakes](/source/John_Battaglia_Memorial_Stakes) at Turfway Park. Request For Parole also finished fifth in the [2002 Kentucky Derby](/source/2002_Kentucky_Derby). In 2003, Margolis trained Baileys Edge to a win in the [Mr. Prospector Handicap](/source/Mr._Prospector_Handicap) at [Gulfstream Park](/source/Gulfstream_Park).
