# Steve Emt

**Stephen Emt** (born January 6, 1970) is an American [wheelchair curler](/source/Wheelchair_curling).[2]

## Early life

Emt was born in Manchester, Connecticut and grew up in [Hebron](/source/Hebron,_Connecticut). He played basketball at [West Point](/source/Army_Black_Knights_men's_basketball) for two years, but dropped out after his father died of a heart attack. He enrolled at the [University of Connecticut](/source/University_of_Connecticut) and walked on onto its [basketball team](/source/UConn_Huskies_men's_basketball), being a part of the [1994 team](/source/1993%E2%80%9394_Connecticut_Huskies_men's_basketball_team) when they won the [Big East](/source/Big_East_Conference_(1979%E2%80%932013)) regular season. In 1995, Emt was involved in a crash while drunk driving, resulting in him becoming paralyzed from the waist down.[3]

## Career

Emt first took up curling in 2013 after being approached by a Paralympic recruiter on [Cape Cod](/source/Cape_Cod).[3]

He represented the United States at the [2018 Winter Paralympics](/source/2018_Winter_Paralympics) and [2022 Winter Paralympics](/source/2022_Winter_Paralympics), finishing in twelfth and fifth places respectively. At the [2026 Winter Paralympics](/source/2026_Winter_Paralympics) in [Milano Cortina](/source/Milano_Cortina), Emt competed in the inaugural mixed doubles wheelchair curling event alongside [Laura Dwyer](/source/Laura_Dwyer), where the pair reached the semifinals and ultimately finished in fourth place.
