# Stephen Silber

**Sir Stephen Robert Silber** (born 26 March 1944) is a retired British judge of the [High Court of England and Wales](/source/High_Court_of_England_and_Wales).

## Legal career

Silber was [called to the bar](/source/Called_to_the_bar) at [Gray's Inn](/source/Gray's_Inn) in 1968 and made a [bencher](/source/Bencher) in 1994. In 1987, he became a [Queen's Counsel](/source/Queen's_Counsel) and in the same year appointed a [Recorder](/source/Recorder_(judge)), qualifying as a Deputy [High Court judge](/source/High_Court_judge_(England_and_Wales)) from 1995 to 1999. He was a member of the Criminal Law Committee of the Judicial Studies Board (now the [Judicial College](/source/Judicial_College)) and a member of the [Law Commission](/source/Law_Commission_(England_and_Wales)) from 1994 to 1999.[1] On 3 December 1999, he was appointed to the [High Court of England and Wales](/source/High_Court_of_England_and_Wales), receiving the customary [knighthood](/source/Knight_Bachelor), and assigned to the [Queen's Bench Division](/source/Queen's_Bench_Division).[2] Since 2004, he has served as a member of the [Employment Appeal Tribunal](/source/Employment_Appeal_Tribunal). He has an [MPhil](/source/MPhil) from [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University), where he is an Honorary Fellow.
