# Stephen Semmes

**Stephen William Semmes** (born 26 May 1962) is the [Noah Harding](/source/Noah_Harding) Professor of Mathematics at [Rice University](/source/Rice_University).[1] He is known for contributions to analysis on [metric spaces](/source/Metric_space), as well as [harmonic analysis](/source/Harmonic_analysis), [complex variables](/source/Complex_variable), [partial differential equations](/source/Partial_differential_equation), and [differential geometry](/source/Differential_geometry). He received his B.S. at the age of 18, a Ph.D. at 21 from [Washington University in St. Louis](/source/Washington_University_in_St._Louis) and became a full professor at Rice at 25.

## Awards

Semmes was awarded a [Sloan Fellowship](/source/Alfred_P._Sloan_Foundation) in 1987.[2] In 1994, he gave an [invited talk at the International Congress of Mathematicians](/source/List_of_International_Congresses_of_Mathematicians_Plenary_and_Invited_Speakers).[3]
