# Stephen Schiffer

**Stephen Schiffer** (born 1940) is an American philosopher and currently Silver Professor of Philosophy at [New York University](/source/New_York_University). He is a specialist in the [philosophy of language](/source/Philosophy_of_language).

## Education and career

Schiffer was awarded a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in philosophy from the [University of Pennsylvania](/source/University_of_Pennsylvania) in 1962 and a [Ph.D.](/source/Ph.D.) in philosophy from [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University) in 1970. He taught at the [University of California, Berkeley](/source/University_of_California,_Berkeley), the [University of Arizona](/source/University_of_Arizona), and the [Graduate Center of the City University of New York](/source/Graduate_Center_of_the_City_University_of_New_York) before moving to the [New York University Department of Philosophy](/source/New_York_University_Department_of_Philosophy). He was elected a [fellow](/source/Fellow) of the [American Academy of Arts and Sciences](/source/American_Academy_of_Arts_and_Sciences) in 2007.[1]

## Philosophical work

He has specialized in the [philosophy of language](/source/Philosophy_of_language), and is the author of three significant works concerning semantic meaning: *Meaning* (OUP, 1972), *Remnants of Meaning* ([MIT Press](/source/MIT_Press), 1987), and *The Things We Mean* (OUP, 2003).
