==Playing career==
Larkin attended the [University of Texas at Austin](/source/University_of_Texas_at_Austin), and played [college baseball](/source/college_baseball) for the [Texas Longhorns](/source/Texas_Longhorns_baseball). He played in the [College World Series](/source/College_World_Series) in [1992](/source/1992_College_World_Series) and [1993](/source/1993_College_World_Series).{{cn|date=December 2022}}

In {{By|1994}}, he was drafted in the 10th round by the [Texas Rangers](/source/Texas_Rangers_(baseball)) and began playing in the minors for the Low-A [Hudson Valley Renegades](/source/Hudson_Valley_Renegades), and then for the Single-A [Charleston RiverDogs](/source/Charleston_RiverDogs) in {{By|1995}}. He also played thirteen games for the [Winston-Salem Warthogs](/source/Winston-Salem_Warthogs) that same year.

In {{By|1996}}, he played for the Single-A [Charleston AlleyCats](/source/Charleston_AlleyCats) for half a season and again for the Winston-Salem Warthogs and stayed on with the latter for the {{By|1997}} season, as well. In {{mlby|1998}}, he was called up from the minors, then playing for the [Chattanooga Lookouts](/source/Chattanooga_Lookouts), for his game with the Cincinnati Reds. Stephen Larkin's hit was a single hit on the ground, which passed between the opponent's first and second basemen during the bottom of the sixth inning of a home game against the [Pittsburgh Pirates](/source/Pittsburgh_Pirates) during the Reds' last game of the season, when the Reds were already eliminated from further contention for that year. He is the brother of [Barry Larkin](/source/Barry_Larkin), who is a member of the [Baseball Hall of Fame](/source/Baseball_Hall_of_Fame). Another brother, [Byron Larkin](/source/Byron_Larkin), was an All-American basketball player at [Xavier University](/source/Xavier_University).
