Having played for the [Worcestershire Second XI](/source/Worcestershire_County_Cricket_Club) from 1976 to 1978,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/25/25194/all_teams.html|title=Teams Stephen Brookes played for|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=29 April 2012}}</ref> Brookes made his first team debut in [county cricket](/source/county_cricket) for [Staffordshire](/source/Staffordshire_County_Cricket_Club) against [Cheshire](/source/Cheshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the 1979 [Minor Counties Championship](/source/Minor_Counties_Championship).  He played [Minor counties](/source/Minor_counties_of_English_and_Welsh_cricket) cricket for Staffordshire from 1979 to 1981, making thirteen appearances for the county in the Minor Counties Championship during that period, with his final appearance coming against [Northumberland](/source/Northumberland_County_Cricket_Club).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/25/25194/Minor_Counties_Championship_Matches.html|title=Minor Counties Championship Matches played by Stephen Brookes|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=29 April 2012}}</ref> Brookes later played [first-class cricket](/source/first-class_cricket) in South Africa for [Eastern Province B](/source/Eastern_Province_cricket_team), making three appearances in the 1981/82 [SAB Bowl](/source/Sunfoil_Series), playing twice against [Boland](/source/Boland_cricket_team) and once [Transvaal B](/source/Transvaal_cricket_team).
