# Stephen Botting

**Stephen Hovey Botting** (5 November 1845 – 23 January 1927) was an English [cricketer](/source/Cricket) who played for [Kent](/source/Kent_County_Cricket_Club). He was a right-handed [batter](/source/Batting_(cricket)) who bowled right-arm [medium pace](/source/Seam_bowling). He was born at [Higham](/source/Higham,_Kent).[1]

Botting played club cricket regularly at [Cobham](/source/Cobham,_Kent). He made his [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) debut for Kent against [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County_Cricket_Club) in 1867 at [Ashford Road, Eastbourne](/source/Ashford_Road) in a match arranged by players rather than officials of either club.[2] He made a second first-class appearance for Kent against the same opposition at the [County Ground, Hove](/source/County_Ground,_Hove), in 1875.[2][1]

Botting worked as a labourer and gardener throughout his life, and played cricket as a professional. He married Jane Stevens in 1870, and the couple had 13 children.[2] He died at [Shorne](/source/Shorne), near [Gravesend, Kent](/source/Gravesend,_Kent) on 23 January 1927, aged 81.[1][3]
