**Stephan Beck** [FMedSci](/source/FMedSci)[1] is a German-British [geneticist](/source/Geneticist) and Professor of Medical Genomics at the [University College London](/source/University_College_London) Cancer Institute.[2]

## Research

Stephan Beck received his PhD in 1985 from the [University of Konstanz](/source/University_of_Konstanz), where he studied DNA structure.[3] He held positions at the [MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology](/source/MRC_Laboratory_of_Molecular_Biology) in [Cambridge](/source/Cambridge), [Millipore Corporation](/source/Millipore_Corporation) in [Boston](/source/Boston), and the [Imperial Cancer Research Fund](/source/Imperial_Cancer_Research_Fund) in [London](/source/London), before joining the [Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute](/source/Wellcome_Trust_Sanger_Institute) in 1996.[4] As Head of Human Sequencing (1998–2006), Beck participated in sequencing and analyzing the human and mouse genomes and established the first DNA methylation maps of human chromosomes [6](/source/Chromosome_6), [20](/source/Chromosome_20), and [22](/source/Chromosome_22).[5]

He is the director of the [Personal Genome Project](/source/Personal_Genome_Project) UK, and serves on the advisory board of the [Human Epigenome Project](/source/Human_Epigenome_Project).[6][7] Beck is a [Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences](/source/Fellow_of_the_Academy_of_Medical_Sciences) and a recipient of a [Royal Society](/source/Royal_Society) Wolfson Research Merit Award.[8][9]

Beck is the [principal investigator](/source/Principal_investigator) of the medical genomics team at the [University College London](/source/University_College_London) Cancer Institute.[10][11]
