Cook was born in [Irvine](/source/Irvine%2C_Scotland), [North Ayrshire](/source/North_Ayrshire), Scotland.<ref name=sportsreference /> She was educated at [Bedford High School](/source/Bedford_High_School_(Bedfordshire)); The [Perse School for Girls](/source/Perse_School_for_Girls); [Peterhouse, Cambridge](/source/Peterhouse%2C_Cambridge) and then [Lincoln College, Oxford](/source/Lincoln_College%2C_Oxford), where she read medicine.

Having rowed at Cambridge, she took up modern pentathlon whilst completing her course in clinical medicine at Oxford. She was president of the Oxford University Modern Pentathlon Association in 1995–1996, and won the women's individual title in the [Varsity match](/source/List_of_British_and_Irish_varsity_matches) against Cambridge in 1997.

Cook won the gold medal in the [Sydney](/source/Sydney) [2000 Olympics](/source/2000_Summer_Olympics) in the women's [modern pentathlon](/source/Modern_pentathlon_at_the_2000_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's),<ref name="sportsreference" /> the first time that the event was included in the games. She went on to win individual World and European titles in 2001 before retiring from the sport. Her particular strength was running.<ref name="sportsreference" />
