# Stearne Miller

**Stearne Ball Miller** (1813 – 2 May 1897)[1] was an [Irish Conservative Party](/source/Irish_Conservative_Party) barrister,[2] judge and politician.

He was born in [Armagh](/source/Armagh), son of the Reverend [George Miller](/source/George_Miller_(historian)), the [Anglican](/source/Anglican) priest and noted [historian](/source/Historian), and Elizabeth Ball, daughter of Robert Ball of [County Wicklow](/source/County_Wicklow).[3] He was [called to the Bar](/source/Called_to_the_Bar) in 1835, Queen's Counsel in 1852.[3] He married Sarah Rutherford, daughter of M.B. Rutherford of [Dublin](/source/Dublin). He lived at Rutland Square in Dublin.[3]

Miller was first elected MP for [Armagh City](/source/Armagh_City_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) in 1857, but was defeated at the next election in 1859. He regained the seat at the 1865 election, but resigned after being appointed the judge in [bankruptcy](/source/Bankruptcy) in 1867.[4] He held office as the Irish Bankruptcy judge until his death in 1897.[5]
