The statue of [Cosimo I de' Medici](/source/Cosimo_I_de'_Medici) stands in the middle of [Knights' Square](/source/Knights'_Square_(Pisa)) of [Pisa](/source/Pisa), just in front of [Palazzo della Carovana](/source/Palazzo_della_Carovana).

The Grand Duke Cosimo is represented in the robes of Grand Master, standing on a high [pedestal](/source/pedestal), in the act of subduing a [dolphin](/source/dolphin), symbol of his domination over the seas. The fountain, in front of the pedestal, was also erected by Francavilla. == History ==
It was commissioned by [Grand Duke Ferdinando I](/source/Ferdinando_I_de'_Medici%2C_Grand_Duke_of_Tuscany) in 1596 to the Franco-Flemish sculptor [Pietro Francavilla](/source/Pietro_Francavilla), who executed it in the elegant [Late Mannerist](/source/Mannerism) tradition.
