Star World Championship First held 1923 Organizer International Star Class Yacht Racing Association Classes Star Champions Paul Cayard & Frithjof Kleen (2025[update]) Most titles Lowell North & Bruno Prada (5) Website https://worlds.starchampionships.org

The **Star World Championship** are international [sailing](/source/Sailing_(sport)) [regattas](/source/Regatta) in the [Star class](/source/Star_(sailboat)) organized by the [International Star Class Yacht Racing Association](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=International_Star_Class_Yacht_Racing_Association&action=edit&redlink=1) and sanctioned by [World Sailing](/source/World_Sailing).[1]

American sailor [Lowell North](/source/Lowell_North) has won the most titles, with five titles between 1945 and 1973 and another seven podiums. Brazilian crew [Bruno Prada](/source/Bruno_Prada) won also five titles between 2007 and 2019. The most crowned skipper-crew combinations are Italian duo [Agostino Straulino](/source/Agostino_Straulino) and [Nicolò Rode](/source/Nicol%C3%B2_Rode) and Brazilian duo [Robert Scheidt](/source/Robert_Scheidt) and Bruno Prada, with three titles each. [Bill Buchan Jr.](/source/Bill_Buchan_Jr.) has three titles, but with different crew.

American sailors have won the most championships, 55 editions, followed by Brazilian sailors, with seven titles, and sailors of Italy with six titles and Germany with five.

Several winners have family relations with each other, e.g. two-time winner [Mark Reynolds](/source/Mark_Reynolds_(sailor)) and 1971 winning crew [James Reynolds](/source/James_Reynolds_(sailor)), 1992 champion [Carl Buchan](/source/Carl_Buchan) and three-time winner [Bill Buchan Jr.](/source/Bill_Buchan_Jr.), 1969 winner [Pelle Petterson](/source/Pelle_Petterson) and his son-in-law 1988 winner [Paul Cayard](/source/Paul_Cayard), and the 1954 and 1955 winning father and son couple [Carlos de Cárdenas](/source/Carlos_de_C%C3%A1rdenas) and [Carlos de Cárdenas Jr.](/source/Carlos_de_C%C3%A1rdenas_Jr.)

The Star was an Olympic class from 1932 to 2012 with the exception of 1976, when it was substituted by the [Tempest](/source/Tempest_(keelboat)).

## History

The first Star World Championships were held on [Central Long Island Sound](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Central_Long_Island_Sound&action=edit&redlink=1) in 1923 and organised by the [Bayside Yacht Club](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bayside_Yacht_Club&action=edit&redlink=1), [Washington Yacht Club](/source/Washington_Yacht_Club) and [Manhasset Bay Yacht Club](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Manhasset_Bay_Yacht_Club&action=edit&redlink=1). Eight boats fought for the trophy and the winner was the yacht *Taurus* with [William Inslee](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=William_Inslee&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Robert Nelson](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Robert_Nelson_(sailor)&action=edit&redlink=1) of Western Long Island Sound fleet.[2]

For the first years, all the championships were held in North America and mostly American sailors participated; the first championships held outside North America were in 1939, in [Kiel](/source/Kiel), Germany.
