'''Stanwix''' is a district of [Carlisle, Cumbria](/source/Carlisle%2C_Cumbria) in [North West England](/source/North_West_England).  The ward population (called Stanwix Urban) had a population taken at the [2011 census](/source/United_Kingdom_Census_2011) of 5,934.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadKeyFigures.do?a=7&b=13691177&c=CA3+0PF&d=14&e=62&g=6411755&i=1001x1003x1032x1004&m=0&r=0&s=1435226508938&enc=1|title=Carlisle ward population 2011|access-date=25 June 2015}}</ref> It is located on the north side of [River Eden](/source/River_Eden%2C_Cumbria), across from Carlisle city centre. Although long counted as a suburb it did not officially become part of the city until 1912 when part of the [civil parish](/source/civil_parish) of Stanwix became part of the parish, city and [municipal borough](/source/municipal_borough) of [Carlisle](/source/County_Borough_of_Carlisle). Further areas were added to the city, which was by then a [county borough](/source/county_borough), in 1934 and 1951. The remaining part of the parish was eventually renamed [Stanwix Rural](/source/Stanwix_Rural) in 1966.<ref>{{cite book |last=Youngs |first= Frederic A Jr. |title=Guide to the Local Administrative Units of England, Vol.2: Northern England |year=1991 |publisher=[Royal Historical Society](/source/Royal_Historical_Society) |location=London |isbn=0-86193-127-0 |page=59}}

==Toponymy==
'Stanwix' means " 'stone wall(s)', v. 'stǣna', 'wag' or 'veggr'{{citation needed|date=June 2021}}
'Stǣna' is [Old English](/source/Old_English) and 'veggr' is [Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse) and cognate with [Old English](/source/Old_English) 'wag'.
Stanwix is built on the site of a [Roman](/source/Roman_Empire) fort known as [Uxelodunum](/source/Uxelodunum) or Petriana, the former meaning "high fort". "[Dun](/source/Dun_(fortification))" is a Celtic word for fort which is to be found in many place-names.<ref>[http://www.universalis.fr/encyclopedie/T304044/UXELLODUNUM.htm Encyclopedia universalis] {{in lang|fr}}</ref>

==Location==
The former village of Stanwix was centred on its church of St Michael's<ref>[http://www.stanwixchurch.org church website]</ref> at the top of a steep bank rising from the river Eden, close to the junction of the main road north (now the [A7](/source/A7_road_(Great_Britain))) with the road to the east (now the [B6264](/source/B6264_road)).
The area around the church is built on the site of the fort of [Uxelodunum](/source/Uxelodunum) (a linear earthwork at the southern end of the churchyard appears to reflect the line of the southern defences).

The fort was the largest on [Hadrian's Wall](/source/Hadrian's_Wall), which adjoined the northwest edge of the fort. The course of Hadrian's Wall runs through the suburb.<ref name="HE1">{{National Heritage List for England|num=1017948|desc=Hadrian's Wall and vallum between the field boundary west of Wall Knowe and Scotland Road including the Roman fort |access-date=19 January 2022}}</ref>
Probably most of the Roman masonry was taken to construct other buildings. However, in 2017 a [bathhouse](/source/Thermae) was discovered at Carlisle Cricket Club's Edenside ground.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Carlisle Roman Bathhouse |url=https://hadrianswallcountry.co.uk/media/news/excavation-carlisle-roman-bathhouse-secures-national-lottery-funding-support}}</ref> This facility is believed to have been for the use of the fort or possibly a [mansio](/source/mansio).

In the mid nineteenth century the district grew with many large houses built for Carlisle's expanding middle classes.{{Citation needed|date=June 2009}} Today Stanwix includes the areas of Edentown, Whiteclosegate, St Anne's Hill and [Belah](/source/Belah).

==Notable buildings==
Near the church today is a small [parade of shops](/source/parade_of_shops) and other businesses.{{Citation needed|date=June 2009}}  [Morrisons](/source/Morrisons)  and [Aldi](/source/Aldi) [supermarkets](/source/supermarkets)  and a [Sainsbury's](/source/Sainsbury's) Local store are located  in the area as well.{{Citation needed|date=June 2009}}  A little further north at Kingstown is a large [Asda](/source/Asda) superstore.{{Citation needed|date=June 2009}}  The [University of Cumbria](/source/University_of_Cumbria) has a campus on Brampton Road (formerly the main campus of the [Cumbria Institute of the Arts](/source/Cumbria_Institute_of_the_Arts)).{{Citation needed|date=June 2009}}  There is also a [Roman Catholic](/source/Roman_Catholic) [private school](/source/private_school) called [Austin Friars St Monica's School](/source/Austin_Friars_St_Monica's_School) located at St. Anne's Hill.{{Citation needed|date=June 2009}}

A single bridge, the [grade I listed](/source/Listed_building) Eden Bridge designed by [Robert Smirke](/source/Robert_Smirke_(architect)),<ref name="HE2">{{National Heritage List for England|num=1297364|desc=Eden Bridge |access-date=19 January 2022}}</ref> crosses the [River Eden](/source/River_Eden%2C_Cumbria) to connect Stanwix and other northern reaches of the district to Carlisle city centre.  Numerous households in low-lying areas in Stanwix were badly affected by the flooding of the River Eden during the Carlisle Floods of January 2005.{{Citation needed|date=June 2009}}

The main road running northwards through Stanwix is Scotland Road, and until 2012 had the dubious distinction of carrying the same daily volume of traffic as the nearby M6 motorway.{{Citation needed|date=June 2009}} In 2012 the "northern relief road" opened, around the north-west of Carlisle, which should ease congestion.
