Joining the University of Ceylon as a lecturer, he went on to head the department of agricultural chemistry. In 1965 he was appointed to the Senate, when [Dudley Senanayake](/source/Dudley_Senanayake) was Prime Minister. During this time [Ruhuna University College](/source/Ruhuna_University_College) and [Batticaloa University College](/source/Batticaloa_University_College) were established and upgraded to university status. In 1989, he was appointed as the Sri Lankan [High Commissioner](/source/High_Commissioner) to India and from 1991 to 1994 he served as the [Permanent Representative](/source/Permanent_Representative) of Sri Lanka to the [United Nations](/source/United_Nations).
