# Stanley Colman

**Stanley Colman** (6 January 1862 – 27 February 1942) was an English [cricketer](/source/Cricket). He played six [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) matches for [Surrey](/source/Surrey_County_Cricket_Club) in 1882.[1]

## Life and career

Stanley Colman was born on 6 January 1862 in [Clapham](/source/Clapham). He was the youngest son of Edward Colman, who had played for [Norfolk County Cricket Club](/source/Norfolk_County_Cricket_Club) in 1845,[2] and the cousin of [Sir Jeremiah Colman](/source/Sir_Jeremiah_Colman,_1st_Baronet) of [Gatton Park](/source/Gatton_Park).

Stanley Colman attended [Amersham Hall](/source/Amersham_Hall) school, near [Reading](/source/Reading,_Berkshire), where his main sport was [athletics](/source/Track_and_field), specifically [sprint](/source/Sprint_(running)) and [hurdles](/source/Hurdling) races. He took up cricket after tearing a [ligament](/source/Ligament) during a competition event.[3]

Colman was a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batting_(cricket)). He made his debut for Surrey against [Nottinghamshire](/source/Nottinghamshire_County_Cricket_Club) at [Trent Bridge](/source/Trent_Bridge) on 29 May 1882.[3][4] A few days later, he scored 63 runs in his first innings against [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_County_Cricket_Club) at [The Oval](/source/The_Oval).[5] His final appearance for the First XI was on 9 September against [Gloucestershire](/source/Gloucestershire_County_Cricket_Club).[6] In total, in the 1882 season, he played six first-class matches, scoring 81 runs in 10 innings.[7]

After being dropped from the First XI, Colman captained the Surrey Second XI.[2] He represented Surrey in one further county match, against [Essex](/source/Essex_County_Cricket_Club) at The Oval in 1888, scoring 19 and 7 in his first and second innings respectively.[8] He played for [W.G. Grace](/source/W.G._Grace)'s XI against [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University_Cricket_Club) in June 1899.[9]

After retiring as a player, he served on the committees of Surrey and the [Marylebone Cricket Club](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club)[2] He was captain of The Wanderers for over 50 years[10] and played both football and [rugby](/source/Rugby_football) for [Clapham Rovers](/source/Clapham_Rovers_F.C.).[2]

Colman died at his home, White House, Heath Drive, [Walton-on-the-Hill](/source/Walton-on-the-Hill), Surrey, on 27 February 1942. His funeral took place at the local parish church, St Peter's.[10]
