# Stan Bennion

**Stanley Bennion** (9 February 1938 – 5 August 2013) was an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football). He played in [the Football League](/source/The_Football_League) as a [winger](/source/Midfielder#Winger) for [Wrexham](/source/Wrexham_A.F.C.) and [Chester](/source/Chester_City_F.C.).

## Playing career

Bennion progressed through [Wrexham](/source/Wrexham_A.F.C.)'s youth setup and signed as a part-time professional with the club in September 1959.[2] He went on to make more than 50 league appearances over the next four years but his opportunities became limited after the signing of [Arfon Griffiths](/source/Arfon_Griffiths) in 1962.[2] The following season saw him agree to join [Halifax Town](/source/Halifax_Town_A.F.C.), but the move collapsed and Stan joined Chester in time for the [1963–64 season](/source/1963-64_in_English_football) as part of a swap deal with [Bill Myerscough](/source/Bill_Myerscough).[3]

He made 20 league appearances in his first season with Chester but did not make any more the following season, although he did play in a [Welsh Cup](/source/Welsh_Cup) tie at Wrexham.[4] He also scored both goals when captain of the Chester side that beat [Tranmere Rovers](/source/Tranmere_Rovers_F.C.) 2–0 to win the [Cheshire Bowl](/source/Cheshire_Bowl).[5]

Bennion then dropped into non-league football, playing for [New Brighton](/source/New_Brighton_A.F.C.) until 1970 and then spending four years with [Rhyl](/source/Rhyl_F.C.).[2] He continued to play local football in the [Chester](/source/Chester) area into the 1990s.[6] Outside football he has been employed by [Cheshire County Council](/source/Cheshire_County_Council).[2]
