**Stafford Alois Repp** (April 26, 1918[1] – November 5, 1974) was an American actor best known for his role as Police Chief Miles Clancy O'Hara on [ABC](/source/American_Broadcasting_Company)'s *[Batman](/source/Batman_(TV_series))* television series.

## World War II

Soon after the December 7, 1941 attack on [Pearl Harbor](/source/Pearl_Harbor), he served a stint in the [United States Army Air Corps](/source/United_States_Army_Air_Corps) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II). He was active in performing in[2] and producing shows while he was in the Army Air Corps.[3] After his military service, he began his acting career.

## Acting career

Repp acted in stage productions on the West Coast before World War II.[3]

At the beginning of his film career, Repp appeared in numerous film and TV productions including the films *[I Want to Live!](/source/I_Want_to_Live!)* (1958) with [Susan Hayward](/source/Susan_Hayward), and *[The Brothers Karamazov](/source/The_Brothers_Karamazov),* both made in 1958. Also at this same time he began to appear in a string of early television programs from the middle 1950s to the early 1960s, including [NBC](/source/NBC)'s [western](/source/Western_(genre)) [anthology series](/source/Anthology_series) *Frontier* and the [Barry Sullivan](/source/Barry_Sullivan_(actor))/[Clu Gulager](/source/Clu_Gulager) western, *[The Tall Man](/source/The_Tall_Man_(TV_series))*.

Repp appeared on [Rod Cameron](/source/Rod_Cameron_(actor))'s *[State Trooper](/source/State_Trooper_(TV_series))*, [Barbara Eden](/source/Barbara_Eden)'s *[How to Marry a Millionaire](/source/How_to_Marry_a_Millionaire_(TV_series))*, [Peter Lawford](/source/Peter_Lawford)'s *[The Thin Man](/source/The_Thin_Man)* (1957), [Tom Tryon](/source/Tom_Tryon)'s *[Texas John Slaughter](/source/Texas_John_Slaughter_(TV_series))* (1958), [Rex Allen](/source/Rex_Allen)'s *[Frontier Doctor](/source/Frontier_Doctor)* (1959), *[Rawhide](/source/Rawhide_(TV_series))* (1959), [Howard Duff](/source/Howard_Duff)'s *[Dante](/source/Dante_(TV_series))* (1961), [Walter Brennan](/source/Walter_Brennan)'s *[The Real McCoys](/source/The_Real_McCoys)* (1957 and 1959), *[Gunsmoke](/source/Gunsmoke)* (1957, 1960 & 1965), *[The Donna Reed Show](/source/The_Donna_Reed_Show)* (1960), *[Guestward, Ho!](/source/Guestward%2C_Ho!)* (1960), *[Angel](/source/Angel_(1960_TV_series))* (1961), and *[Dennis the Menace](/source/Dennis_the_Menace_(1959_TV_series))* (1962 and 1963). He appeared as Joe Melvin, a plumber, in a 1963 episode of *[The Lucy Show](/source/The_Lucy_Show)*, "Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower".

Repp made four appearances on *[Perry Mason](/source/Perry_Mason_(1957_TV_series))* between 1959 and 1962 in minor roles, including Private Investigator Phillip Morgan in "The Case of the Petulant Partner."

From 1963 to 1964, he portrayed Brink, the factory supervisor on [Phil Silvers](/source/Phil_Silvers)' *[The New Phil Silvers Show](/source/The_New_Phil_Silvers_Show)*. His series co-stars were [Buddy Lester](/source/Buddy_Lester), [Herbie Faye](/source/Herbie_Faye), [Elena Verdugo](/source/Elena_Verdugo), [Ronnie Dapo](/source/Ronnie_Dapo), and [Sandy Descher](/source/Sandy_Descher).

Repp made appearances in *[The Twilight Zone](/source/The_Twilight_Zone_(1959_TV_series))* episodes "[Nick of Time](/source/Nick_of_Time_(The_Twilight_Zone))" which starred [William Shatner](/source/William_Shatner); a supporting role in "[The Grave](/source/The_Grave_(The_Twilight_Zone))" with a cast which consisted of [Lee Marvin](/source/Lee_Marvin), [Lee Van Cleef](/source/Lee_Van_Cleef), [Strother Martin](/source/Strother_Martin), [James Best](/source/James_Best), and [Elen Willard](/source/Elen_Willard); then finally in "[Caesar and Me](/source/Caesar_and_Me_(The_Twilight_Zone))."

In early 1966, he appeared as a railroad detective in an episode in the last season of *[My Favorite Martian](/source/My_Favorite_Martian)*.

In 1966, he started his stint as Chief O'Hara on *[Batman](/source/Batman_(TV_series))*. While on *[Batman](/source/Batman_(TV_series))*, he appeared as a guest in numerous other television programs, including *[Love American Style](/source/Love%2C_American_Style)*, *[I Dream of Jeannie](/source/I_Dream_of_Jeannie)* and *[The Mothers-in-Law](/source/The_Mothers-in-Law)*, in the latter once again playing a policeman.

His last released film was *[Linda Lovelace for President](/source/Linda_Lovelace_for_President)* in [1975](/source/1975_in_film). He had a posthumous appearance in *[Mannix](/source/Mannix)* that was first broadcast two months after his death. His last television appearance was on the TV show *[M*A*S*H](/source/M*A*S*H_(TV_series))* (as a Military Police Officer) that was first broadcast four months after his death. Shortly before his death in 1974, he filmed several scenes for [Orson Welles](/source/Orson_Welles)' unfinished film *[The Other Side of the Wind](/source/The_Other_Side_of_the_Wind)*, which was not completed and released until 2018.

## Personal life

Repp was married and had five children.[4]

Repp died of a heart attack at age 56 on November 5, 1974, in Inglewood, California.[4] He is interred at Westminster Memorial Park in [Westminster, California](/source/Westminster%2C_California). After his death, his sister, a television writer, established the Stafford Repp Memorial Scholarship for alumni of his [alma mater](/source/Alma_mater), Lowell High School.[5]
