'''SquidGuard''' is a [URL redirector](/source/URL_redirector) software, which can be used for [content control](/source/content-control_software) of websites users can access. It is written as a [plug-in](/source/Plug-in_(computing)) for [Squid](/source/Squid_(software)) and uses [blacklists](/source/Blacklist_(computing)) to define sites for which access is redirected. SquidGuard must be installed on a [Unix](/source/Unix) or [Linux](/source/Linux) computer such as a server computer. The software's filtering extends to all computers in an organization, including [Windows](/source/Microsoft_Windows) and [Macintosh](/source/Mac_OS_X) computers.

It was originally developed by Pål Baltzersen and Lars Erik Håland, and was implemented and extended by Lars Erik Håland in the 1990s at [Tele Danmark](/source/Tele_Danmark) InterNordia.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.squidguard.org/history.html |title=SquidGuard |publisher=SquidGuard |date= |access-date=2012-07-20 |archive-date=2012-07-16 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120716005133/http://www.squidguard.org/history.html |url-status=dead }}</ref> Version 1.4, the current stable version, was released in 2009,<ref name=changelog>{{Cite web | url=http://www.squidguard.org/Downloads/CHANGELOG | title=Squidguard Changelog | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081119083218/http://www.squidguard.org/Downloads/CHANGELOG | archive-date=2008-11-19 }}</ref>{{failed verification|date=October 2019}} and version 1.5 was in development as of 2010.<ref name=changelog/>{{failed verification|date=October 2019}} New features in version 1.4 included optional [authentication](/source/authentication) via a [MySQL](/source/MySQL) database.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.squidguard.org/Doc/1.4/features.html |title=SquidGuard |publisher=SquidGuard |date= |access-date=2012-07-20 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120716005108/http://www.squidguard.org/Doc/1.4/features.html |archive-date=2012-07-16 |url-status=dead }}</ref>

SquidGuard is [free software](/source/free_software) licensed under the [GNU General Public License](/source/GNU_General_Public_License) (GPL) version 2. ==Blacklist Sources==
The url filtering capabilities of SquidGuard depend largely on the quality of the Blacklists used with it. Several options are available. Free lists can be found at Shallalist.de <ref>[http://www.shallalist.de/ Shallalist website] - This website does not provide any list anymore.</ref> or at Université Toulouse 1 Capitole.<ref>[http://dsi.ut-capitole.fr/blacklists/index_en.php Université Toulouse 1 Capitole website]</ref>
