'''Squaretop Mountain''' is an {{convert|11,695|ft|meter|adj=mid|-elevation|abbr=off|sp=us}} mountain summit located in [Sublette County](/source/Sublette_County%2C_Wyoming) of [Wyoming](/source/Wyoming), United States.<ref name=gnis/>

== Geography ==
The peak is the emblematic geographical feature of the remote [Wind River Range](/source/Wind_River_Range) and is set seven miles west of the [Continental Divide](/source/Continental_Divide).<ref>Joe Kelsey, 2013, ''Climbing and Hiking in the Wind River Mountains'', Falcon Guides, {{ISBN|9781493001354}}, page 37.</ref> It is situated in the [Bridger Wilderness](/source/Bridger_Wilderness) on land managed by [Bridger-Teton National Forest](/source/Bridger-Teton_National_Forest). [Topographic relief](/source/Topographic_relief) is significant as the northeast aspect rises {{convert|3,700|ft|m|abbr=off|sp=us}} above the [Green River](/source/Green_River_(Colorado_River_tributary)) in one-half mile. The iconic view of Squaretop and Green River Lakes has been on the [Wyoming license plate](/source/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Wyoming) since 2016.

== Climate ==
According to the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification) system, Squaretop Mountain is located in an alpine [subarctic climate](/source/subarctic_climate) zone with long, cold, snowy winters, and cool to warm summers.<ref name=Peel>{{cite journal | author = Peel, M. C. |author2=Finlayson, B. L. |author3=McMahon, T. A. | year = 2007 | title = Updated world map of the Köppen−Geiger climate classification | journal = Hydrol. Earth Syst. Sci. | volume = 11 | issn = 1027-5606}}</ref> Due to its altitude, it receives precipitation all year, as snow in winter, and as [thunderstorm](/source/thunderstorm)s in summer. Precipitation [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from the mountain drains north into the Green River.

== Climbing ==

The [first ascent](/source/first_ascent) of Squaretop was made sometime before 1921 by William John Stroud (1854–1946), via the {{YDS|2}} southeast ledges. [Fred Beckey](/source/Fred_Beckey) and [Layton Kor](/source/Layton_Kor) climbed the Northeast Face in 1960.<ref>[http://publications.americanalpineclub.org/articles/12196138001/North-America-United-States-WyomingWind-River-Range-Northeast-Face-Squaretop Fred Beckey, 1961, ''North America, United States, Wyoming—Wind River Range, Northeast Face, Squaretop'' Americanalpineclub.org]</ref>
