Springvale station is a below ground [premium station](/source/premium_station), featuring two side platforms. It opened on 1 September 1880, with the current station provided in 2014.<ref name="vicsigspringvale">{{cite web|url=http://www.vicsig.net/infrastructure/location/Springvale|title=Springvale|website=vicsig.net|access-date=21 January 2023|archive-date=10 December 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221210111716/https://vicsig.net/infrastructure/location/Springvale|url-status=live}}</ref>

Initially opened as '''Spring Vale''', the station was given its current name of Springvale on 29 February 1972.<ref name="vicsigspringvale">{{cite web|url=http://www.vicsig.net/infrastructure/location/Springvale|title=Springvale|website=vicsig.net|access-date=21 January 2023|archive-date=10 December 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221210111716/https://vicsig.net/infrastructure/location/Springvale|url-status=live}}</ref>

==History==

Springvale station opened on 1 September 1880, almost three years after the railway line from [Oakleigh](/source/Oakleigh_railway_station) was extended to [Dandenong](/source/Dandenong_railway_station).<ref name=vicsigspringvale/> Like the suburb itself, the station was named after the ''Spring Vale Hotel'', the proprietor inspired by the [natural spring](/source/Spring_(hydrology))s in the area for travellers and [stock](/source/Livestock) between Melbourne and [Dandenong](/source/Dandenong%2C_Victoria).<ref name="vpspringvale">{{cite web|url=https://www.victorianplaces.com.au/springvale|title=Springvale|publisher=Victorian Places|accessdate=21 January 2023|archive-date=2 March 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230302233617/https://www.victorianplaces.com.au/springvale|url-status=live}}</ref> The name was also inspired by a place near the [Bog of Allen](/source/Bog_of_Allen) in the proprietor's native [Ireland](/source/Ireland).<ref name=vpspringvale/>

In 1964, [boom barrier](/source/boom_barrier)s replaced [interlocked gate](/source/Interlocking)s at the former [Springvale Road](/source/State_(Bell%2FSpringvale)_Highway) [level crossing](/source/level_crossing), which was located at the [up](/source/Rail_directions) end of the station.<ref name="somersaultjan90">{{cite magazine|date=January 1990|title=Level Crossing Protection|author=John Sinnatt|magazine=Somersault|publisher=Signalling Record Society Victoria|pages=9–17}}</ref>

In 1975, the [signal box](/source/signal_box) was provided with a new relay interlocking system.<ref>{{cite book|author=Vincent Adams Winter|title=VR and VicRail: 1962–1983|year=1990|isbn=0-9592069-3-0|page=106 }}</ref> Also occurring in that year, a [crossover](/source/Railroad_switch) was abolished at the up end of the station, with a new crossover provided at the down end.<ref name=vicsigspringvale/> In 1976, the goods platform was abolished.<ref name="newsrailapr76">{{cite magazine|date=April 1976|title=Works|magazine=[Newsrail](/source/Newsrail)|publisher=[Australian Railway Historical Society](/source/Australian_Railway_Historical_Society)|page=92}}</ref>

On 7 June 1996, Springvale was upgraded to a [premium station](/source/premium_station).<ref name="newsrailoct97">{{cite magazine|date=October 1997|title=Upgrading Eltham to a Premium Station|magazine=Newsrail|publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society|pages=303–315}}</ref>

The remnant of a former [branch line](/source/branch_line), which operated to [Spring Vale Cemetery station](/source/Spring_Vale_Cemetery_railway_station), was located at the down end of the station. In 1922, it was provided with [overhead wiring](/source/Overhead_line).<ref name=vicsigspringvale/> In 1952, the majority of the line was dismantled,<ref name=vicsigspringvale/> with the remaining portion of the line becoming a [siding](/source/Siding_(rail)).<ref name=vicsigspringvale/> In October 2002, it was booked out of use<ref name="somersaultjan03">{{cite magazine|date=January 2003|title=Signalling Alterations|magazine=Somersault|publisher=Signalling Record Society Victoria|page=3}}</ref> and, in August 2008, the associated [point](/source/Railroad_switch)s and [signal](/source/Railway_signal)s, the crossover and overhead wiring were removed.<ref name="newsrailsep08">{{cite magazine|date=September 2008|title=Works|magazine=Newsrail|publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society|pages=278–282}}</ref>

On 30 January 2012, the signal box was abolished, with control transferred to the Dandenong signal box.<ref name="newsrailmar12">{{cite magazine|date=March 2012|title=Works|magazine=Newsrail|publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society|page=89}}</ref> In mid-2013, construction commenced on a [grade separation](/source/grade_separation) project to eliminate the Springvale Road level crossing, immediately adjacent to the station. As part of this project, a new station was constructed below street level, which opened on 22 April 2014.<ref>{{cite web |title=Springvale Station upgrade & Level Crossing removal |url=http://hmtmelptgallery.weebly.com/springvale-station.html |website=Melbourne's Public Transport Gallery |language=en}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |last1=Carey |first1=Adam |title=Split-level luxury arrives at Springvale station, at $159 million |url=https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/splitlevel-luxury-arrives-at-springvale-station-at-159-million-20140422-372dt.html |website=The Age |language=en |date=22 April 2014}}</ref>
