**Springfield** is a suburb of [Johannesburg](/source/Johannesburg), [South Africa](/source/South_Africa). It is a small [industrial suburb](/source/Industrial_suburb) located south of the [Johannesburg CBD](/source/Johannesburg_CBD), close to [La Rochelle](/source/La_Rochelle,_Gauteng). It is located in Region F of the [City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality](/source/City_of_Johannesburg_Metropolitan_Municipality).

## History

Prior to the discovery of gold on the [Witwatersrand](/source/Witwatersrand) in 1886, the suburb lay on land on one of the original farms called *Turffontein*.[1] Springfield became a suburb in 1906.[1]
