The **Spring Glen Synagogue** is a [Jewish](/source/Judaism) congregation and [synagogue](/source/Synagogue), located along Old [U.S. Route 209](/source/U.S._Route_209_in_New_York) in the [hamlet](/source/Administrative_divisions_of_New_York#Hamlet) of [Spring Glen](/source/Spring_Glen%2C_New_York), part of the Town of [Wawarsing](/source/Wawarsing%2C_New_York) in [Ulster County](/source/Ulster_County%2C_New_York), [New York](/source/New_York_(state)), in the United States. It was one of the first established in a [Jewish American](/source/Jewish_American) community in the [Catskill](/source/Catskill_Mountains) region, and is still in use today.

## History

Sam Meyerson, the region's first Jewish resident, bought land in the area shortly after 1900. His neighbors, all [Christians](/source/Christians) of various [Protestant](/source/Protestant) [denominations](/source/Christian_denomination), decided to accept and befriend him after conferring about the matter among themselves.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Other Jewish families followed, and a congregation was formally established in 1908.[2]

The congregation had been meeting at Spring Glen's [Episcopal](/source/Episcopal_Church_in_the_United_States_of_America) church. By the early 1910s, with more Jewish families buying [summer homes](/source/Cottage) in or near Spring Glen, members realized they needed a place of worship of their own. In July 1916, the [Torah scrolls](/source/Sefer_Torah) were dedicated. Two local [Gentiles](/source/Gentile), [stationmaster](/source/Stationmaster) Wells C. Smith and [postmaster](/source/Postmaster) John Thornton, presented the congregation with a [Bible](/source/Bible) they had purchased.[3] Throughout most of 1917, a small white [clapboard](/source/Clapboard_(architecture)) bungalow with blue trim house in the middle of the hamlet, festooned with wooden [Stars of David](/source/Star_of_David), in the center of the hamlet, was under construction, finished in 1918.

In 1920 the congregation formally [incorporated](/source/Incorporation_(business)). The synagogue was open every morning and afternoon for prayers, and congregants helped sustain it through the off-season by holding their [weddings](/source/Wedding), [bar mitzvahs](/source/Bar_mitzvah), [Yom Tovs](/source/Jewish_holidays) and other ceremonies there.[2]

No significant changes have been made to the building since its construction other than the addition of discreet [aluminum](/source/Aluminum) siding and bathrooms, during the 1960s.[4] It was added to the [National Register of Historic Places](/source/National_Register_of_Historic_Places) in 1999.
