The **Spring Champion Stakes** is an [Australian Turf Club](/source/Australian_Turf_Club) [Group 1](/source/Group_races) [Thoroughbred horse race](/source/Thoroughbred_horse_race) for three-year-olds at [Set Weights](/source/Set_Weights) over a distance of 2000 metres at [Randwick Racecourse](/source/Randwick_Racecourse), [Sydney](/source/Sydney), [Australia](/source/Australia) in October.[1] Prize money is A$2,000,000.

## History

The race has been won by horses that later became champions. These include [Kingston Town](/source/Kingston_Town_(horse)), [Beau Zam](/source/Beau_Zam) and [Tie the Knot](/source/Tie_the_Knot). The [Gloaming Stakes](/source/Gloaming_Stakes) is considered a major preparatory race for this event.[1]

### Name

Originally when the race was inaugurated it was known as the Australasian Champion Stakes.[1] The event was changed to its current name in 1978.[1]
