**Spongehead** were an American [noise rock](/source/Noise_rock) band formed in Brooklyn, New York, formed in 1985.[1] The band was formed by brothers David and [Doug Henderson](/source/Doug_Henderson_(musician)) and drummer Mark Kirby. Their fusion of [jazz](/source/Jazz), [blues](/source/Blues) and [funk](/source/Funk) music was compared to [Pere Ubu](/source/Pere_Ubu) and [Barkmarket](/source/Barkmarket), whose bandleader, [Dave Sardy](/source/Dave_Sardy) has worked with Spongehead on most of their albums.[2][3]

## History

Spongehead formed in Brooklyn in 1985, featuring Dave Henderson on saxophone, [Doug Henderson](/source/Doug_Henderson_(musician)) on vocals and guitar, and Mark Kirby on drums. With [Kramer](/source/Kramer_(musician)) producing, the band released their 1988 debut *[Potted Meat Spread](/source/Potted_Meat_Spread)* on [Shimmy Disc](/source/Shimmy_Disc).[4] The band began to tighten musically and they released *[Legitimate Beef](/source/Legitimate_Beef)* in 1991. Influenced by past collaborations with [Eugene Chadbourne](/source/Eugene_Chadbourne), the lyrics embraced a [dadaic](/source/Dada) viewpoint on politics.[1]

1993's [Curb Your Dogma](/source/Curb_Your_Dogma) was produced by [Dave Sardy](/source/Dave_Sardy) of [Barkmarket](/source/Barkmarket) and showcased a maturation in the band's sound.
