Portion of the cranium that is derived from pharyngeal arches

The **splanchnocranium** (or **visceral skeleton**) is the portion of the [cranium](/source/Cranium) that is derived from [pharyngeal arches](/source/Pharyngeal_arch). *Splanchno* indicates to the gut because the face forms around the mouth, which is an end of the gut.[1] The splanchnocranium consists of [cartilage](/source/Cartilage) and [endochondral bone](/source/Endochondral_bone). In [mammals](/source/Mammal), the splanchnocranium comprises the three [ear ossicles](/source/Ear_ossicles) (i.e., [incus](/source/Incus), [malleus](/source/Malleus), and [stapes](/source/Stapes)), as well as the [alisphenoid](/source/Alisphenoid), the [styloid process](/source/Temporal_styloid_process), the [hyoid apparatus](/source/Hyoid_apparatus), and the [thyroid cartilage](/source/Thyroid_cartilage).[2]

In other [tetrapods](/source/Tetrapod), such as [amphibians](/source/Amphibian) and [reptiles](/source/Reptile), homologous bones to those of mammals, such as the [quadrate](/source/Quadrate_bone), [articular](/source/Articular), [columella](/source/Columella_(auditory_system)), and [entoglossus](/source/Entoglossus) are part of the splanchnocranium.[2]
