### Female line

Spinaway's dam was Megara who was bred by [John Hunter](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=John_Hunter_(horseman)&action=edit&redlink=1), a founder of [Saratoga Race Course](/source/Saratoga_Race_Course) and the first person to serve as chairman of [The Jockey Club](/source/Jockey_Club_(United_States)). Spinaway was by far the best of her foals.

Megara's dam, Ulrica, was the dam of [Ben Ali](/source/Ben_Ali_(horse)) who won the [1886 Kentucky Derby](/source/1886_Kentucky_Derby). Ulrica also produced Memento (1879) who won the first edition of the Spinaway Stakes in 1881.

Megara's good sire was [Eclipse](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eclipse_(British_horse)&action=edit&redlink=1) (1855) who also sired:

- [Ruthless](/source/Ruthless_(horse)) (1864) - [U.S. Hall of Fame](/source/National_Museum_of_Racing_and_Hall_of_Fame) inductee won [Belmont Stakes](/source/Belmont_Stakes), [Travers Stakes](/source/Travers_Stakes)

## Racing career

Future Hall of Fame inductee [Wyndham Walden](/source/R._Wyndham_Walden) trained Spinaway for owner [George Lorillard](/source/George_L._Lorillard). Her career was basically limited to her two-year-old season of 1880 when she was not just the dominant filly that year but also beat her male counterparts in every one of her seven stakes wins.[5] Following its creation in 1997, *[Thoroughbred Heritage](/source/Thoroughbred_Heritage)* staff did a retrospective titled *Champions of the Turf* and selected Spinaway as the 1880 [American Champion Two-Year-Old Female](/source/American_Champion_Two-Year-Old_Filly).[6]

In a profile of Spinaway by *[Wallace's Monthly](/source/Wallace's_Monthly)* covering the year of 1880, they referred to a *[Spirit of the Times](/source/Spirit_of_the_Times)* report on Spinaway's ability by their columnist known as "*Albion*" who had witnessed her win a maiden race at [Jerome Park](/source/Jerome_Park_Racetrack) and the [July Stakes](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=July_Stakes_(Monmouth_Park)&action=edit&redlink=1) at [Monmouth Park](/source/Monmouth_Park_Racetrack). "*Albion*" wrote: "I have been a turf attendant for some years, and have seen a number of races and fine finishes, but I have never seen a horse finish like this filly."[7]

A hoof injury led to Spinaway's retirement at age three.

## Broodmare

Owner George Lorillard died in 1886 and Spinaway became the property of his brother [Pierre](/source/Pierre_Lorillard_IV). By 1889 Spinaway had been sold to Milton Young, the owner of the important breeding operation, [McGrathiana Stud](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=McGrathiana_Stud&action=edit&redlink=1). She would be sold again to [Norman Kittson](/source/Norman_Kittson) who in 1882 had purchased Erdenheim Stud Farm from Aristides Welch.

From eleven foals, Spinaway produced two good runners. The colt Lazzarone (1891), who won the [Latonia Derby](/source/Latonia_Derby) and [Suburban Handicap](/source/Suburban_Handicap), and a filly Handspun (1892) whose wins included the [Kentucky Stakes](/source/Kentucky_Stakes), [Willow Handicap](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Willow_Handicap&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Tennessee Oaks](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tennessee_Oaks&action=edit&redlink=1).

Bred to [Hanover](/source/Hanover_(horse)), Spinaway foaled Handspun who in turn was the dam of the great racing filly [Tanya](/source/Tanya_(horse)), winner of the 1905 [Belmont Stakes](/source/Belmont_Stakes).
