The '''''spesmilo''''' ({{IPA|eo|spesˈmilo|pron}}, plural '''''spesmiloj''''' {{IPA|eo|spesˈmiloi̯|}}) is an obsolete [decimal](/source/decimal) international [currency](/source/currency), proposed in 1907 by [René de Saussure](/source/Ren%C3%A9_de_Saussure) and used before [World War I](/source/World_War_I) by a few [British](/source/Great_Britain) and [Swiss](/source/Switzerland) banks, primarily the [Ĉekbanko Esperantista](/source/%C4%88ekbanko_Esperantista).

The ''spesmilo'' was equivalent to one thousand ''spesoj'', and worth {{convert|0.733|g|oz}} of pure [gold](/source/gold) (0.8 grams of 22 [karat](/source/Carat_(purity)) gold), which at the time was about one-half [United States dollar](/source/United_States_dollar), two [shilling](/source/shilling)s (one-tenth of a [pound sterling](/source/pound_sterling)) in [Britain](/source/United_Kingdom), one [Russian ruble](/source/Russian_ruble), or {{frac|2|1|2}} [Swiss franc](/source/Swiss_franc)s.

The basic unit, the ''speso'' (from Italian ''spesa'' or German ''Spesen'';<ref>{{cite book |last=Cherpillod |first=André |year=2007 |title=Konciza Etimologia Vortaro |publisher=[Universala Esperanto-Asocio](/source/Universala_Esperanto-Asocio) |pages=432 |isbn=9789290170822 |language=Esperanto}}</ref> ''spesmilo'' is [Esperanto](/source/Esperanto) for "a thousand pennies"), was purposely made very small to avoid fractions.
