The **Spenser Mountains** is a topographic [landform](/source/Landform) in the northern [South Island](/source/South_Island) of [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand). Located at the southern end of the [Nelson Lakes National Park](/source/Nelson_Lakes_National_Park) and north of the [Lewis Pass](/source/Lewis_Pass) they form a natural [border](/source/Border) between the [Canterbury](/source/Canterbury%2C_New_Zealand) and [Tasman](/source/Tasman_Region) regions. Several peaks are named after characters in [Edmund Spenser](/source/Edmund_Spenser)’s allegorical poem, [The Faerie Queene](/source/The_Faerie_Queene). Many of the early explorers were evidently literate men. For example, Frederick Weld (a surveyor) named [Lake Tennyson](/source/Lake_Tennyson); [William Travers](/source/William_Travers_(New_Zealand_politician)) (a solicitor) named the Spensers and Faerie Queene; [Julius Haast](/source/Julius_Haast) named Mt Una.

Within the range prominent peaks include [Mount Una](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mount_Una&action=edit&redlink=1) and Mount Humboldt.[1] The Spenser Mountains are the northern limit of the [glaciers](/source/Glaciers_of_New_Zealand) within the [Southern Alps](/source/Southern_Alps).[2]

Much of the forest cover is beech/[podocarp](/source/Podocarp) with understory of a variety of ferns and shrubs; [crown fern](/source/Lomaria_discolor) (*Lomaria discolor*) is one of the dominant understory ferns.[3]
